California burgers and a bramble lemonade.
I’m fortunate to have spent a few days recently in Los Angeles. The city is one of the most bizarre places on earth. Such a mixture of wealth, poverty and utter flim flam.
The car is king, you can drive through for your coffee, your bank or even for your prescription drugs. Eight lanes on a freeway are a little daunting, even for a driver well used to the M25 at rush hour.
However, the shopping is brilliant, the sun shines in a beautiful blue sky, the Pacific Ocean is a short drive away and everywhere is air conditioned.
Food in California is a mixture too. You can have anything and everything. You can have it on the side, over easy or nut free. You choose.
Fast food is everywhere of course, and as we are on holiday we did indulge. At our favourite place the very simple menu is suplimented by a not very secret menu. One absolute hit was the burgers served “protein style”, which simply means wrapped in a pair of iceberg lettuce leaves. Ideal if you have decided to swerve the carbs for a bit, or if like me the bread rolls in the bread bin have seen better days!
Another real favourite in LA is pink lemonade. Often served still and almost barbie pink it wasn’t something we indulged in too much until one establishment offered us a version that came with real strawberries in a light syrup to flavour the lemonade.
Tonight for tea I tried to recreate a little of this California style in South London.
The burgers were wrapped in iceberg leaves and I even managed to find an illicit pack of “spread” from America to really authenticate the taste. The fries were replaced by sweet potato fries and all washed down with a bramble lemonade.
2 tbsp blackberries (fresh or frozen)
1 tbsp sugar
How to …
- Place the brambles and sugar in a pan. Heat gently and stir ocasionally until the brambles release their juices.
- Leave to cool.
- Half fill a glass with ice, top up with lemonade.
- Add in a spoonful or two of bramble syrup.
- Pop in a straw, and imagine your toes are in the Pacific.
