Catch it if you can – the Olympic torch relay.

Indulge me for a moment.

On Friday last week my husband ran with the Olympic torch. It was the most amazing day. I doubt we will stop smiling until the end of the Opening ceremony.

Up bright and early on the morning of the relay we headed off towards Sevenoaks where Mike was to run. Finding the spot was not too tricky and we set up camp along with what was to become hundreds of others. Whilst we had a personal reason to shout, applaud,  whistle and cheer everyone else had come out into the rare summer sunshine to watch the spectacle. What we got, and what I hope everyone experienced, was the sheer energy and magic that the torch seemed to impart. I was expecting a rush of adrenalin and a  personal surge of love and pride for Mike and the fact he was being recognised for the quiet way he has supported local sport and charities over the years. I got all of that in bucket loads but I also felt the joy and pleasure cascading from the crowd who were there simply to clap, cheer and congratulate people they didn’t know. In a world where greed is good, money talks and everyone appears to be in it for their own personal gain this torch has brought back a little awe and wonder onto the streets of Britain.

If you have yet to experience the torch relay I suggest you do. Leave the cynicism behind and whistle for all you are worth. I guarantee you will feel better for it.
